Every year, following a detailed selection process that goes over many submissions, three faculty members are chosen to receive the New Jersey Governor’s Educators of the Year award- one from the support staff, one from educational services, and one educator. These faculty members put a tremendous amount of effort into creating a positive school environment, and they are all well-deserving of the award. Here are the nominees!
Mr. Verdon is the recipient of the New Jersey Governor’s Educator of the Year Award. Mr. Verdon joined Ramapo in 2017 and is described in overwhelmingly positive ways by both students and staff. Mr. Verdon teaches history, encouraging students and promoting success while also finding time to incorporate wellness activities. Students feel extremely inspired by his creative lessons, and his colleagues have a great time working with him. He is also the advisor of the Model UN, in which students discuss and work out real world international issues. Mia Narula, who is one of the presidents of Model UN and works closely with Mr. Verdon, expressed, “I’ve seen firsthand the hard work and dedication he puts into Model UN. It’s clear how much he cares about the growth of those in the program and his students.” When Mr. Verdon himself was asked how he felt receiving the award, he gave a heartfelt response that truly captures his dedication to Ramapo and work that he puts in to inspire students: “Receiving this award was an incredibly humbling experience, especially in a building filled with so many talented colleagues who are equally deserving of recognition. More than the honor itself, what meant the most to me was seeing how genuinely happy my students — both past and present — were to hear the news. Their kindness reaffirmed what I often tell people: Ramapo High School is a truly special place, home to the best students, staff, and parents. Over the years, watching students develop confidence, curiosity, and a deeper understanding of the world has been one of the great blessings of my career.” His words echo the immense passion he has for teaching and how special this school is to him.
The recipient of the Governor’s Educational Services Professional Award is Mr. Walty, a dedicated and passionate guidance counselor here at Ramapo. Initially working at Indian Hills, Mr. Walty joined the Ramapo community in 2018. He has worked with hundreds of students, providing guidance about personal matters, class scheduling, and college decisions. Students have described him as devoted and caring, truly supporting the students of Ramapo and creating a stronger and happier community. He commented, “I am incredibly thankful to receive this award. When you’re truly passionate about something in life, mine being helping students, an honor like this doesn’t just recharge you; it gives you that extra push to continue inspiring those around you.”
Last, but certainly not least, is Mr. Tony, who is the recipient of the Support Staff Award from Ramapo. A member of the custodial staff, Mr. Tony, puts a huge amount of effort into keeping our building clean and sanitary and is committed to student happiness. His positivity is contagious, brightening the days of both students and staff, and is definitely well-deserving of this award.
Mr. Verdon, Mr. Walty, and Mr. Tony all put so much effort into making Ramapo a better place and are definitely deserving of these awards. Congratulations!
