Following four years of dedication, hard work, and academic excellence, Sean O’Neill has been named the Valedictorian of the Class of 2026. Known by many for his intelligence, humility, and positive attitude, Sean has distinguished himself not only through his academic accomplishments but also through his involvement in athletics, service, and leadership during his time at Ramapo High School and throughout the greater community.
While maintaining one of the highest academic records in the class, Sean challenged himself with a rigorous course load and consistently approached learning with curiosity and enthusiasm. His favorite classes at Ramapo included AP United States History and his freshman engineering course for the opportunities it gave for hands-on learning in the woodshop with Mr. Russo.
“I think my favorite class was APUSH because it provides a baseline knowledge of American history that I feel everyone should know,” Sean said.
One teacher who has seen Sean’s academic growth firsthand is Mr. Caulfield, who taught him in math classes during both his junior and senior years. “I’ve been lucky enough to have Sean. Sean’s superpower is that he can have fun in almost any situation. He always jokes about these complicated math topics, which you can only do if you understand them deeply. He definitely works hard, but he’s never anxious about it; there’s an easy confidence,” explained Mr. Caulfield.
He went on to further note that Sean’s success extends far beyond the classroom. “Sean is at his best hanging out with other people, whether joking around or focusing on a project,” he said. “If you look at his extracurriculars, whether it’s sports here at Ramapo, St. Elizabeth’s Church, Boy Scouts, or volunteering with developmentally challenged children, you say, here is a guy who can go out and get stuff done. But again it’s always with this cheerful attitude, like, ‘Cool, what’s next?’”
Throughout high school, Sean was heavily involved in both athletics and extracurricular activities. He participated in Wrestling, Boys Volleyball, and Debate Club, balancing each commitment while maintaining his academic responsibilities.
Outside of school, Sean dedicated all four years of high school to volunteering as a catechist at St. Elizabeth’s Roman Catholic Church in Wyckoff. Teaching religious education classes gave him a new perspective on learning and the role educators play in students’ lives.
“It was very rewarding to be on the teaching side of the classroom,” Sean said. “It made me appreciate my teachers more because I realized how much of a pain in the neck misbehaving students can be, while it also helped me understand how impactful teaching can be.”
One of Sean’s close friends and fellow senior, Paul Tsocanos, believes one of Sean’s most admirable qualities is his ability to uplift those around him. He describes Sean as someone who is always willing to help others, offer thoughtful advice, and maintain an optimistic outlook regardless of the circumstances.
Paul also credits Sean’s academic success to his desire to truly understand what he learns rather than simply memorize information. In their AP Physics C class, Sean was known for approaching problems creatively and finding unique ways to visualize concepts. “During an AP Physics C test near the beginning of the year, I saw this dude pick up his pencil and drop it repeatedly,” Paul said. “I asked him why he did this, and he responded that it helps him visualize the motion and answer the questions, and I think that is indicative of his character, trying to learn in his own way.”
Beyond daily habits and prioritizing making the most out of his time during the day to stay productive, Sean believes looking long-term is the most helpful.“I think it is important to first establish long-term goals, and then say what could I do now to best position myself to succeed then,” he said.
In the fall, Sean will attend the University of Notre Dame, where he plans to study Economics and Applied Mathematics. Looking ahead, he is considering a future in banking, law, or another field that will allow him to apply the analytical skills he plans to further develop in college.
As the Class of 2026 prepares to graduate, Sean O’Neill leaves behind a legacy defined not only by academic excellence but by humility, optimism, and a genuine commitment to helping others. Whether in the classroom, on the volleyball court, or serving his community, Sean has consistently led by example.
Rampage congratulates Sean on earning the title of Valedictorian and wishes him the very best as he begins this exciting new chapter! Ramapo has no doubt that his future will be filled with continued success, growth, and opportunities to make a positive impact on those around him!
