Even with the looming threat of planet extinction and suffocating hopelessness, Project Hail Mary is more than just another science-fiction film about the end of the world—it’s an inspiring story about friendship.
Adapted from Andy Weir’s novel of the same name, Project Hail Mary follows middle school science teacher Ryland Grace (portrayed by Ryan Gosling) and his sudden involvement in an operation to save the planet. Microscopic parasites known as Astrophage are dimming the Sun, threatening Earth and all of its inhabitants. Grace, a quirky and sarcastic molecular biologist, is sent on a mission to a planet unaffected by Astrophage to discover a cure (radiotimes.com).
This film is much more than an end-of-the-world epic, however. While in space, Grace befriends a spider-like rock alien, a creature he names “Rocky,” who is in space for a similar reason: to save his planet from the Astrophage. “Friendship is the real sole focus of this movie,” said Ramapo junior Eirica Feehan. “Grace’s and Rocky’s unlikely friendship is very endearing and makes this movie stand out from the rest. It’s very light-hearted and sweet, but also action-packed and nervewracking.” It’s Rocky and Grace’s teamwork that proves critical in saving their planets, and it’s their bond with each other that wins the hearts of audiences.
Released to U.S. theaters on March 20, Project Hail Mary has solidified its place among the top hits of 2026, amassing over $570 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. As of its release, it has had the highest grossing film debut of 2026 after earning over $140 million in its opening weekend (radiotimes.com). Project Hail Mary is bound to break more records as audiences continue to flock to the theaters.
While the numbers are impressive, it’s fans’ opinions that speaks to the success of the film. “Thinking it would be similar to Andy Weir’s other book-turned-film, The Martian, I had no idea Project Hail Mary would end up being so quirky,” explained Ramapo English teacher Mr. Basili. “It’s more than that though, it’s beautiful and even inspiring, too. There’s a lot of fun to be had watching the film and it’s definitely an original.” The film has garnered a lot of attention online as well for its hopefulness and warmth. Many have even regarded the film as a major contender for the 2026 Oscars, though nomination announcements are quite a ways away.
The movie’s success has also boosted sales of Andy Weir’s 2021 Project Hail Mary book, according to the Wall Street Journal. “I read the book a couple of years ago,” reported junior Eirica Feehan. “I loved the movie just as much and I’m glad it’s now getting the attention it deserves.” The book is now at the top of many bestseller lists, including the New York Times, a testament to its emotional depth and compelling storytelling.
A heartwarming tale of sacrifice and heroism, Project Hail Mary proves that friendship transcends all boundaries: language, space, and, perhaps most notably, species.
