After much speculation, Olivia Rodrigo announced the upcoming release of her third album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love. She announced it on April 2nd after her fans spotted murals popping up across the US, hinting at her return. Though the album is set to release on June 12th this year, she dropped a single recently. The song is called “Drop Dead” and was released on April 17th along with a music and lyric video.
Rodrigo started her career acting for Disney Channel before switching to singing and songwriting. Her past albums, Sour and Guts, have been angry and sorrowful breakup albums. This new album, however, will feature new storylines and melodies. She exclaimed, “I am so proud of this album, and I can’t wait for you to hear it!” publicly on her Instagram. Many speculate that this album is more about adult love and the struggles that come with it. Her new single seems to have proved that as well. (www.elle.com)
Her song features a mix of modern pop and ’80s indie rock. A writer with The Guardian states, “Her perfect couplet heralds an ecstatic chorus about the giddy terror of getting exactly what you wanted, exactly how you wanted it” (www.theguardian.com). The song has received a great response from most fans, and they’ve stated they are enjoying this new era she’s entered. Others, though, miss her old style as well. English teacher at Ramapo, Dr. Ross, commented, “I like ‘drop dead’ but not as much as some of my classic favorites from Sour.” Many also believe this album is inspired by her private relationship with famous actor, Louis Patridge.
One of the biggest things to come from this album so far is that the music video for “Drop Dead” was filmed at the Palace of Versailles. This was significant because Versailles is an incredibly protected French landmark. No other artist had been granted permission to use that space in over a decade. Her being granted access just went to show her significance not just in the United States, but globally (www.forbes.com).
It seems that this will be another hit on the charts for Rodrigo. Buzz around her new album has already spread rampant throughout the globe. Sophomore at Ramapo, Isabella Deubel told us, “I went to Olivia Rodrigo’s GUTS tour in 2023, and it was such a good show!” She continued, “ Her new song is so good, and my friends and I can’t wait for the rest of the album.”
Fans are clearly ecstatic waiting for this new album to drop, and the possibility of another world tour. Fans cannot wait to see what’s next to come from her!
