When a team is formed, every member has the opportunity to grow as a teammate. Still, only a select few consistently set the standard for effort, attitude, and accountability in everything they do. Senior Maddie Saxton embodies this servant-hearted leadership. using her resilience, voice, and unwavering work ethic to support and unite the people around her, whether on the field, in the classroom, or in the community. Because of the example she sets and the way she uplifts others without seeking recognition, Maddie was honored with this year’s Unsung Hero Award.
According to the Director of the Award, “This year, our theme is Profiles in Purpose. We are focusing on students who lead through quiet strength, resilience, and a steadfast commitment to their school communities—often without seeking the spotlight. These honorees represent the true heart of our districts.” (2026 Bergen County Unsung Heroes Flipbook). In honor of all of the remarkable students who have been recognized for this award, a flipbook was made describing every student who has received the award for their true character and the impact they have made. The flipbook characterizes Maddie as “A resilient student-leader who balances a disciplined academic focus with a heart for service and inclusivity. Maddie’s commitment to challenging herself and supporting those around her has made her a Cornerstone of character and Leadership within the Ramapo community.” (2026 Bergen County Unsung Heroes Flipbook)
In Maddie’s junior year, she suffered an ACL tear. Maddie was injured for the rest of her junior season. “I believe I have grown in every way in my recovery process.” Maddie states, “Being injured has allowed me to reset and rebuild myself physically and mentally. I first viewed it as a setback, but now I see that it helped me shape who I am on and off the field.” Maddie is the definition of resilience. Her recovery may have affected her game, but not her spirit as a player, which ultimately is part of why she was awarded the Unsung Hero Award. Her basketball coach, Coach Gordan, comments, “She does whatever she can to help the team. Maddie has grown into a tremendous leader. Always cheering for her teammates, doing whatever she can to help the team. During games, she keeps the bench upbeat and also does game stats.”
In the classroom, Maddie is an exceptional, well-rounded student. Maddie is the cofounder and vice president of the Women in Business club, where she works on having dozens of young women in our school build their resumes and learn all about the field of business. The club also got the opportunity to go see Wall Street, inspiring the club members in the world of finance.
Maddie is also a member of the student government as a board representative for Ramapo. She attends BOE meetings (Board of Education) and reports back key information to our school to keep our school informed. Maddie helps out sorting student government drives, attending Homeroom Rep meetings, and making sure that the school is being well represented by the student body.
Maddie has officially committed to Marist University, where she will continue her journey as a soccer player and carry on her optimistic, positive, supportive attitude alongside her teammates. She has left a lasting legacy for the players who will come after her. Her impact shines far brighter than any single moment on the field, which is entirely why she has received the Unsung Hero award. This recognition not only celebrates her talent but also her heart, perseverance, and the inspiration she leaves behind at Ramapo.
