The 83rd Annual Golden Globes took place on January 11th, showcasing the beloved glambots, meaningful awards, and raunchy jokes by the host for the second year in a row, Nikki Glaser. The night was filled with glamorous celebrities, lavish meals, and celebration of the impressive works nominated.
The list of nominees this year was incredibly impressive, including major names such as Cynthia Erivo, Arianna Grande, Emma Stone, and Amanda Seyfried. Prior to the ceremony, Senior Emily Rolla stated her opinions regarding the Wicked actresses being nominees: “I’ve seen a lot of press about the new Wicked movie, and I think both Arianna Grande and Cynthia Erivo are deserving of an award.” However, not everyone was on the same page about the nominees. English teacher Ms. Schwarz passionately stated, “Paul Mescal is not a supporting actor in Hamnet. Ariana Grande is not a supporting actor in Wicked. I understand that their agents want to strategize on how they can best win an award, but the game playing turns recognition of good art into a chess match.” There is definitely debate among the media as to whether or not these ceremonies are truly a celebration of raw talent and art, or simply a popularity contest.
One of the most successful productions of the night was Hamnet scoring an 86% on Rotten Tomatoes and receiving six Golden Globe nominations, including Best Drama Motion Picture, Best Actress in a Drama Motion Picture (Jessie Buckley), and Best Director of a Motion Picture (Golden Globes). Ultimately, they took home two Golden Globes for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture, and Best Motion Picture – Drama.
The new movie Marty Supreme, starring Timothee Chalamet, has been skyrocketing with popularity since its release on Christmas Day. Chalamet was up against Big-Shot names for the Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy award such as Leonardo DiCaprio, George Clooney, and Ethan Hawke. Yet, Chalamet came out on top winning the award. This being Chalamet’s first Golden Globe, Chalamet was incredibly grateful for finally accomplishing one of his greatest dreams. Chalamet stated in his speech, “If you would have told me when I was 19 years old that I would be thanking Mr. Wonderful from Shark Tank,” . He also acknowledged the impressive people he was up against for this award, and praised his nominees saying that he “looked up” to all of them (Esquire). His gracious response caught the hearts of fans in the media, and filled them with joy that Chalamet finally got his Golden Globe.
Diving deeper into the behind the scenes of this glamorous event, Vogue magazine reports that the stars dined on a curated meal by Chef Nobu Matsuhisa including “a yellowtail jalapeño, a caviar cup, lobster salad with spicy lemon dressing, and a progression of nigiri, each brushed with nikiri soy.” This inside scoop shows viewers how elegant these A-List events can be.
Nikki Glaser started her monologue off with a bang, instilling her return as solo-hostess from last year’s ceremony. Her classic sarcasm found its way into her opening lines as she stated that the Golden Globes were “without a doubt, the most important thing happening in the world right now.” It seemed like no celebrity made it out alive without being grazed by Glaser’s raunchy sarcasm.
However, Glaser explained in an interview prior to the Golden Globes that she was unsure how to approach making a joke about Julia Roberts, as she would be in attendance. Glaser stated, “People don’t want to laugh about Julia. People don’t think that’s funny, you don’t laugh about her. She’s protected. She’s like our Kate Middleton” (Unilad). At the same time, Glaser didn’t want to leave Roberts out of the fun, so she ended up making a joke about Julia Roberts’ presence, coming off as more of a compliment than a jab. Glaser stated, “Just like the podcasters nominated tonight, I should not be allowed to be this close to Julia Roberts” (ABC News). Glaser’s talent for hosting was shown throughout the night, as she still included everyone while knowing what her audience would respond well to.
The popular Television Adolescence show won big at the Golden Globes as well. The show gathered an impressive amount of recognition, especially from its actors as three of the awards consisted of best performances. Owen Cooper, who plays Jamie Miller in the television show had an absolutely outstanding performance, earning him the award for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role on Television. This award makes Cooper the youngest male winner in Golden Globes history at only sixteen years old (USA Today). Senior Joan Carilli, who watched the show as soon as it came out states, “I thought it was very impressive how each episode was only shot in one take. The show definitely featured a lot of talent.” It is especially impressive that such a young actor has so much potential and an incredible range already.
After another successful ceremony, the Golden Globes continue to uphold their reputation as a glamorous and high media attracting event.
