Mason Thames is about to have a huge year, as he is starring in two completely different movies that emphasise his acting range! His breakout film, The Black Phone (2021,) completely turned his life upside down, and he is returning to the big screen in Black Phone 2, but that’s not it! He will also be starring in a film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s novel Regretting You, which displays a softer side to Thames that fans have yet to see.
Thames has returned as his character, Finney Blake, in Black Phone 2, continuing the story of the teen who escaped the Grabber’s basement in the original 2021 film. The sequel covers the more psychological aftermath of the trauma he endured, and now there are new supernatural disturbances that have begun to come up. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film has taken influence from Freddy Krueger. Similarly, both he and the Grabber are able to inflict both psychic and physical violence on the characters through their dreams.
Amelia Remo, who is both a fan of the first movie and a student at Ramapo, says, “I absolutely loved this first movie. I especially can’t wait to see this new one now that the characters are older and the story is darker.” Many of the fans are excited to see how Mason takes on this role and brings a new level of emotion to this character.
On the opposite emotional end, Thames will be starring in Regretting You as the character Miller Adams. This movie is centred on grief, family breakdown, and unexpected healing. This new adaptation will allow Thames to display his vulnerability and emotional intensity in a romantic aspect, which is something fans have yet to see. According to TeenVogue, this is Thames’s first time playing a romantic lead, and it has allowed him to depart from the intensity of Black Phone 2 and push him to slow down and sit with emotion instead of action. Chelsea Salmins, a sophomore at RHS, is a big fan of Thames and noted, “It is really cool to see so many sides of him now. I’m so used to seeing him in high-intensity situations, but it’s exciting to see him take on something softer and more personal.”
If anything, these two new movies have shown Thames’s expanding range and rising influence on young and upcoming actors. He is proving he can do it all from leading both horror franchises and emotional dramas. This year has truly been a turning point in his career, and he is making sure everyone knows it.
