Little did seniors Giancarlo DeMarco and Max Lohman know when they co-founded a successful fragrance company a few years ago that it would lead them to create a new club at Ramapo. But that is exactly what happened. This fall, the Entrepreneurship Club made its debut, joining the school’s roster of already impressive after-school clubs and activities offered to students.
Run by co-presidents Demarco and Lohman, the club is open to all students who are interested in business, problem-solving, and creating new business opportunities.
Co-president Lohman says the club was created because “we wanted to give students a space to explore business ideas, learn how to take risks, and understand what it means to build something from the ground up.”
The club will focus on teaching entrepreneurial skills, connecting students with real founders and CEOs, and providing opportunities for participants to build businesses of their own through a series of club projects and competitions.
Perhaps the club’s most outstanding offer is access to real-life business leaders. The guest speaker series gives students the chance to meet and speak with business leaders who are all prominent in their respective fields. Upcoming speakers include Gary Kayal of Terracare Landscaping and Lisa Demarco of Demarco Law. More guest speakers will be announced in the coming weeks.
The teacher supervisor of the club is Mrs. Rubenchik, who teaches Physics. When asked about why she chose to supervise the club, she explained, “I taught Max and Giancarlo last year, and they were really great students in my class. When they asked me if I would agree to supervise the club, I agreed because they also have their own businesses, and this club makes sense as an addition to Ramapo.”Because the club is student-led and driven, Mrs. Rubenchik hopes that students will build a community around people interested in being entrepreneurs.
The Entrepreneurship Club’s first meeting was on September 24, and they plan to meet one to two times a month for the rest of the school year in room 710.
