On January 12, 2025, 24-year-old Louisiana State University football superstar Kyren Lacy was arrested on charges originating from a fatal car crash that occurred on December 17, 2024. This incident resulted in the death of 78-year-old Herman Hall, which led to Lacy’s arrest on charges of negligent homicide, felony hit-and-run, and reckless operation of a vehicle. His plans to become an NFL football player were immediately destroyed. Soon after the crash, Lacy, a projected 1st round pick, was no longer invited to the NFL Combine, became unlikely to be drafted or sign endorsement deals, and was preparing to potentially serve time in jail. On April 12, just days before facing a grand jury, Lacy was found dead from an apparent “self-inflicted gunshot wound” (ESPN.com). He had committed suicide.
According to ABC News, the District Attorney’s office found that the report filed by the Louisiana State Police contained “several inconsistencies.” Most notably, the report stated that Lacy was actively driving past vehicles in the left lane at the time of impact. However, video evidence reviewed by Lacy’s attorney, Matt Ory, indicated that Lacy was 72.6 yards behind the vehicles at the time of the collision (CNN.com). These initial findings have raised questions about the accuracy of the police report and Lacy’s role in the crash.
On October 5th, Louisiana TV station HTV10 released statements from Lacy’s attorney, which were widely spread across public platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, and X/Twitter. From these reports, the nation was informed that Lacy was supposedly innocent, which prompted widespread uncertainty about the case. The news began to spread that an innocent man had killed himself due to backlash from the public. One day later, ESPN personality Ryan Clark addressed the case nationally, deeply explaining his personal connection to Lacy, and declaring that “Kyren Lacy was innocent” (ESPN).
Following the public commentary from Clark and the public outcry, the LSPD released additional information to clarify the events leading to the crash. The video footage they countered showed Lacy driving 88 mph in a 40 mph zone, while also driving straight through the opposing, left lane (ESPN.com). The footage suggests that as Lacy re-entered the right lane, his actions caused a chain of events ahead, leading to the multi-vehicle crash. The ongoing back-and-forth between Lacy’s legal team and law enforcement has left the public very confused, with many key details still unresolved.
Regardless of reports and apparent evidence, supporters of Lacy continue to cite evidence suggesting he may not have caused the crash. At the same time, the LSPD still claims that Lacy’s driving behavior contributed to a chain reaction of disturbances on the road, ultimately resulting in the incident. With conflicting reports from law enforcement, the district attorney, and Lacy’s legal team, the case remains under review. Senior Kyle Kientopp shared his thoughts on the uncertainty of the controversial topic, stating that “we shouldn’t listen to the first report we hear for everything,” and that it is important to look further into a subject before promoting it. As he stated, I completely agree with the importance of finding out more information before taking a side. Furthermore, Coach Russo agreed with the same speculation of this case: “Get it right before you rush to judgment.” Mr. Russo also thinks the public should wait for confirmation of facts before jumping to a conclusion.
As of October 13, 2025, the investigation remains ongoing. Filled with different perspectives from each side of the story, the public has been left unsure of their own opinions, hoping that more evidence and reports will be released soon. Unfortunately, regardless of the outcome, nothing can bring back Kyren Lacy, as his family, friends, and fans continue to mourn his loss.
