On Sunday, February 1st, 2026, Savannah Guthrie’s mother, Nancy Guthrie, was abducted from her home in Tucson, Arizona. This devastating news shocked many across the country, and the Guthrie family remains devastated by her disappearance. Authorities launched an urgent investigation, and with very few details emerging, they are still searching for a way to bring her home.
Savannah and her family have received multiple ransom notes requesting millions of dollars for them to return to safety (People Magazine). Authorities still don’t know if these ransom notes were really sent by the kidnappers of Nancy, or if they were even related to the case. A report from Newsweek states that one of the ransom note’s senders has repeatedly contacted the outlet during the investigation, asking for payment in cryptocurrency in exchange for information about Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance. The sender claims to have seen her alive in the state of Sonora, Mexico (Newsweek).
Natalie Gerber, a sophomore here at Ramapo, was in Tucson, Arizona, at the same time that Nancy was taken. “My family and I saw all over the news that she was taken,” Natalie commented. “We saw helicopters, and many people trying to spread the word that she was missing.” Natalie’s experience reflects the widespread concern and urgency felt throughout the Tucson community, and beyond.
Viewers and the members of The Today Show have shown their support. Everyone on the show has been wearing a yellow ribbon pin, representing the hope of her safe return home. Just this month on April 6th, Savannah made her first appearance back on the show since taking a break after her mom initially went missing. She returned to the show wearing a yellow dress, honoring her mother.
Mrs. Vander Molen, one of the History teachers here at Ramapo, comments, “It’s always unsettling to hear about something like that happening, especially if it’s in a place that feels familiar or safe. I immediately thought about her family and what they must be going through. Situations like this also make people more aware of their surroundings and how quickly something can change. I also felt something extra was at work since Savannah is such a high-profile news anchor”. The speculation over Nancy is endless, and the hope that she is safe is even greater. Savannah mentioned in a recent interview that her mom needs her heart medication to survive (People Magazine). “It felt like there was a ticking time bomb because she is elderly and in need of medication, so in the first 48 hours it felt more like a panic” Mrs. Vander Molen added .
Ultimately, cases like Nancy’s serve as a reminder of how quickly normal life can be disrupted and how deeply such events affect not only families but entire communities. The search for Nancy remains an urgent and emotional effort that has united her family, investigators, and the public hope for her safe return. Although many questions remain unanswered, the continued attention, support, and determination surrounding the case show that her disappearance has deeply affected not only the Guthrie family but also the people still holding out hope for her to return home safely.
