On Wednesday, September 10, 2025, Charlie Kirk was shot in the neck at a public debate at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. Charlie Kirk was a political activist who had strong opinions and conservative beliefs. He co-founded a conservative organization called Turning Point USA and served as its executive director. Kirk travelled to many different colleges and universities, conducting debates, gaining popularity for his tendency to spark controversy.
Around 3,000 students, parents, and young adults attended Charlie’s “Prove Me Wrong” debate tables the day of his assassination. According to The Guardian, it was twenty minutes into his event that Charlie Kirk was shot and rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Immediately after the crime, officials started searching for the suspect. 71-year-old George Zinn was briefly detained moments after the assassination as the prime suspect when he yelled out, “I shot him – now shoot me” (BBC). Once he was questioned, authorities concluded he had no connection to the actual shooter. On September 11th, officials found images of a 20-year-old male wearing all black from campus security footage, who then became the prime suspect. Two days later, a rifle was found in nearby woods at the Utah campus. Fingerprints on the murder weapon confirmed Tyler Robinson was the shooter. Robinson’s father told authorities that his son admitted to pulling the trigger and stated the murder weapon was a gift given to Robinson by his grandfather. As the evidence piled up, Robinson was taken into custody and denied bail; he currently awaits his trial.
President Donald Trump announced Charlie Kirk’s death via Twitter shortly after the assassination. Kirk’s assassination was caught on video, and clips were quickly posted to social media, gaining mass attention. Cole Seddon, a Sophomore at Ramapo, said, “I was in English class, and saw the news on Twitter and saw that there were gun attacks in the area where Charlie was holding his debate, and immediately told my peers. It was devastating and a very disturbing, gory act for someone to do.” The public’s responses varied. Some mourned and respected Charlie Kirk’s legacy, and some questioned the real impact he made – criticizing his motivation for activism.
In memory of Kirk’s death, Donald Trump, on whitehouse.gov, made this proclamation: “As a mark of respect for the memory of Charlie Kirk… I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff”. Charlie Kirk’s assassination was not, however, the only act of gun violence on September 10th. At Evergreen High School in Colorado, a gunman opened fire, injuring two students (NBC News). While the media focused on covering Kirk’s assassination, stations commented that recent acts of gun violence are overwhelmingly frequent, sparking debate on gun regulation and a crackdown on reckless political violence (PBS News).
Erika Kirk, Charlie Kirk’s wife, has now taken over Turning Point USA with an endorsement from President Trump and plans to carry on Charlie Kirk’s legacy. Charlie Kirk’s determination to stand up for conservative beliefs will live on through his organization.
