New York Fashion Week (NYFW) is a worldwide event within the fashion industry where many well-known designers are given the chance to showcase their upcoming season collection to the world. From February 6th to February 11th, 2025, the Women’s ready-to-wear Autumn/Winter 2025 collection was held just a couple of miles away in New York City. Having almost 10 to 11 shows each day, many of the designer’s latest collections were shown gaining fame through different social media platforms, such as TikTok (arianee.com).
As the complexity of the world continues to arise some designers’ lines were dedicated to keeping things simple. Using pastel and neutral colors and simple patterns, the clothing presents a state of safety and comfort. At the same time, other designers such as Ulla Johnson, Diotima, and Anna Sui went for more of a Glam Rock Line. Using the ideas of the past collection and 1970 musicians to give more of a boho look. Using sequins, mixed patterns, and contrasting textures they conveyed a quirky yet still moderate line. In contrast, other designers such as Khaite, Tyler McGillivary, Christian Siriano, and Kim Shui created lines using the idea of Tough as Leather. Which displayed confidence through each run. Using leather materials in various colors, especially black, red, and gold, the models were casting a rockstar feel through each strut (Fashiondive.com). On the other hand, designers like Marc Jacobs went for a bold experiment trying new things, using irrational size proportions and complex textures.

Ramapo Freshman Kelly Trolaro is currently in Fashion and Technology, not being able to watch the show firsthand she managed to catch a glimpse of the different shows from TikTok and YouTube. When speaking with her she said, “I enjoy watching New York Fashion Week and have been trying to keep up with all the different designers and their styles over the past years. Yet, this year the designers brought forth somewhat of an odd show, their clothing lines were so complex and different.” Still, Kelly is fond of the creative aspect brought by the designers and will continue to watch the different shows.
Among many designers, some well-known ones who showed their collections throughout the week were Marc Jacobs, Brandon Maxwell, Thom Browne, Calvin Klein, Collina Strada, Alice+Olivia, Sandy Liang, Christian Cowan, Anna Sui, and Prabal Gurung (Usatoday.com). Though there were many other designers, each show’s design ranged from being minimalistic to being maximalist.

When opening and closing such a well-known show placed a tremendous weight on designers Marc Jacobs and Thom Browne, who managed to create a flawless run. Commencing the show, designer Marc Jacobs known for being bold brought forth sophisticated styles and magnified silhouettes (Whowhatwear.com). While concluding the show Thom Browne —who’s known for pushing the limits —closed with an ornithology-themed show that had many stretched-out shoulders, exaggerated size portions, and lots of plaid. (Wwd.com).
When speaking with Ramapo Indian Hills Fashion’s teacher Ms. Lesly, on her interpretation of Thome Brown’s closing show, she had much to say about what she watched, “The show starts with a dark stage and set filled with paper birds, making the reminiscences of the classic horror film. When the two models entered in garments they evoked a feeling as if one were a part of a Harry Potter Film. Then the two proceed to sit at a table where they observe the models as they enter the venue.”When asked about the pieces specifically she stated, “ As usual, Mr. Browne’s tailoring techniques are impeccable. The suits worn started with something that would be more mainstream and casual which then slowly turned into suits that would be considered more defiant and surreal. Many of the pieces could be worn interchangeably and could be worn as streetwear.” Yet, Ms. Lesly believes that Thom Brown’s show was incredible in so many ways from the clothing to the creativity behind the display, She encourages students to check it out whenever needing to feel inspired.
New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2025 showcased an immense range of diverse styles from simple and conservative to complex and bold. Yet, each designer managed to capture the essence of the world’s cultural evolution.
