The 2026 NFL Wild Card Weekend was nothing short of electrifying, engaging, and exciting, delivering some of the most dramatic football in recent memory. The games left fans across the world buzzing about what they think will happen next. An astonishing four out of five games were determined by a margin of four points or less, which is quite rare in the NFL playoffs and made every matchup incredibly tense (ESPN).
The weekend opened with a thriller as the Los Angeles Rams edged the Carolina Panthers 34-31 in Charlotte. Quarterback Matthew Stafford did what he does best and orchestrated a clutch game-winning drive down by four with 2:38 left in the fourth quarter. He hit tight end Colby Parkinson for a 19-yard touchdown to seal it. Even with the loss, this season was nothing but remarkable for young quarterback Bryce Young and the Carolina Panthers, as it was the first time they have been NFC South champions since their historic Super Bowl run back in 2015 (ESPN).
Later that night, the Chicago Bears pulled off a miraculous eighteen-point comeback in their rivalry game against the Green Bay Packers at home in Chicago. Young sensation Caleb Williams commanded his team, throwing a decisive 25-yard touchdown to wide receiver DJ Moore late in the fourth quarter to win a truly unforgettable game 31-27. This was a defining moment for the Bears, marking their first playoff win in fifteen years (ESPN).
Ramapo junior Ryan Conlon says this about the comeback, “The Bears showed real fight and never quit, even when it looked over. That comeback was all about heart and staying locked in until the end.”
Sunday’s action only continued the thrill as we saw the Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars go at it. Each drive felt crucial, and the lead changed four times in the fourth quarter alone. With 4:03 left, Bills quarterback Josh Allen led a beautiful drive that ended in Josh Allen himself taking it in for a 1-yard touchdown. The Jaguars got the ball with a little over a minute left; however, it didn’t matter much as Cole Bishop intercepted Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence on the first play of the drive. Buffalo’s 27-24 win marked head coach Sean McDermott’s first playoff win on the road (ESPN). After the game, when asked about the game-winning drive, Allen stated, “It felt good to know we had all three timeouts. We had enough time on the clock to run our offense where there was no panic, no rush.” (NFL.com). Ramapo sports history teacher Mr Nangle also stated this about the win: “Any year the Bills have Josh Allen, they can win the Super Bowl. I don’t think this past weekend was truly an upset, but they have a hard road to get to the Superbowl being on the road for all of the playoffs. It will be interesting to see what happens, but I would not count the Bills out.”
The most highly anticipated matchup of the entire weekend was between the San Francisco 49ers and the Philadelphia Eagles. Quarterback Brock Purdy played with confidence and poise as he threw for 262 yards and a pair of touchdowns. However, It wasn’t only Purdy that threw touchdowns for the 49ers. The first play of the fourth quarter opened with a high-intensity trick play that left fans shocked as they saw wide receiver Jaun Jennings throw a beautiful touchdown pass to none other than running back Christian McCaffrey for the lead. The 49ers’ defense stayed strong, holding Philadelphia to zero second-half touchdowns, which ultimately helped them win this game 23-19 and dethrone the previous Super Bowl champions (ESPN).
The Sunday Night Football game between the Chargers and the Patriots was the lowest-scoring game of all the Wild Card Weekend games. The Patriots’ defense tightly contained Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert, who had only 216 all-purpose yards. The Patriots led for most of the game as this was a defensive slugfest with three total turnovers, and they scored a late fourth-quarter touchdown to secure the 16-3 win. This was the first Patriots playoff win since their 2018 Super Bowl victory. The win marks a new era in New England led by quarterback Drake Maye and head coach Mike Vrabel (ESPN).
We go to Pittsburgh for the last game of this thrilling Wild Card Weekend to see the Houston Texans square off against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Early this game looked like what it had been anticipated to be: a defensive battle. Although they had two turnovers, Houston still led 7-6 at halftime. The third quarter looked the same as the Texans kept their lead. It was in the fourth quarter that the game really started to pick up. It was now the Texans’ turn to get turnovers as they returned both a fumble recovery and an interception for touchdowns. They easily pulled away and beat the Steelers 30-6. This loss for Pittsburgh marks the ninth year in a row they haven’t won a playoff game and continues this unfortunate drought (ESPN).
Wild Card Weekend 2026 wasn’t just about who went home a winner; it was about the resilience, rivalries, and exciting football that made it jaw-dropping to watch. As the divisional round approaches, one thing is certain: the road to Super Bowl LX is unpredictable, intense, and just getting started.
