Every year, tennis players from all over the world have four chances at achieving the ultimate triumph: the championship title of a Grand Slam. The Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon, and the U.S. Open are the four iconic tournaments that are followed and revered by tennis fans worldwide.
This year’s U.S. Open tournament marks the 145th year of the event and the fourth and final Grand Slam tournament of the year. More notably, Stacey Allaster, the United States Tennis Association’s chief executive of professional tennis and the tournament director of the U.S. Open since 2020, stepped down after this year’s championship. Previously the CEO and chairman of the Women’s Tennis Association and Chief Executive of Professional Tennis since 2016, Allacter’s contributions to the tennis industry are immeasurable. (ESPN)
In the singles championship, Carlos Alcarez crushed Yannik Sinner as their famous rivalry continued for yet another thrilling rewatch, and Aryna Sablanka defended her title as champion against underdog Amanda Anisimova. Ava L’Heureux, a senior at Ramapo, shared that she had hoped Anisimova would win, especially after her astounding performance against the Number 2 Seed Iga Swiatek in the semifinals—a long-awaited rematch after Swiatek’s crushing victory over Anisimova in the Wimbledon final with a score of 6-0, 6-0. She said, “I normally watch a lot of tennis and really enjoy it. Neither of the singles matches ended how I had hoped, but it was still really exciting to watch. Marisa Christian, a senior at Ramapo and a member of Ramapo’s Varsity Tennis team, shared her experience attending the Men’s Final Championship at Arthur Ashe Stadium at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. She commenced, “The experience was AMAZING! I’ve been to the U.S. Open before, but going to the finals is so much more exciting. You can almost feel the anxiety from the players. You could see how badly Carlos and Sinner both wanted to win.” In the doubles championship, doubles pair Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos captured their second Grand Slam men’s doubles victory. At the same time, Gabriela Dabroksi and Erin Routliffe upset the number one women’s double seed in a riveting final match. Another notable aspect of this year’s tournament was legendary tennis player Venus Williams, who has held 71 career titles throughout her 25-year career, competing in both the doubles and singles tournaments as the oldest player competing since 1981, at age 45. Among some of the most striking incidents included the Number 5 Seed Jack Draper, who withdrew from the tournament before his second round due to an arm injury, and later announced his retirement for the season. American Number 6 Seed Ben Shelton was also forced to retire from the tournament, withdrawing from the third round with a severe shoulder injury.
And with that, the 2025 season of Grand Slam Tournaments comes to a close. As the 2026 French Open approaches in January, the results of the 2025 U.S. Open are sure to set the stage for many more years of thrilling, shocking, and gripping matches.
