This past December, Ramapo’s Model UN held their very first POMUN. POMUN is an annual conference that brings together both Po and Hills to discuss and debate global issues prevalent in today’s world. This two-day conference is the perfect opportunity for new members to test the waters, and for old members to get back into the MUN spirit. A total of 54 students participated representing countries from Thailand to Norway.
The three committees chosen this year were DISEC, SOCHUM, and WHO. The Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC) discussed solutions to implement rules and regulations in space exploration. Additionally, delegates were asked to consider the importance of space exploration and how much government funding should be provided to these institutions. The Social, Cultural, and Humanitarian Committee (SOCHUM) was a double delegate committee with 22 delegates— the largest of the three! Delegates of proposed policies and programs to increase access to education in low-income areas. Lastly, the World Health Organization (WHO), students debated ways to expand global vaccination access.
As the media manager of Model UN, Junior Ava L’Heureux oversees @ramapohighschoolmodelun on instagram and was a chair for the WHO committee. She shares, “POMUN went really well, we had a great turnout and the students were well prepared, well spoken, and overall very impressive.” She continues, “There was a good mix between fun and serious competition.”
Congratulations to the following Po Students for their outstanding participation:
DISEC Best Delegate: Maverick Gomez (Chile)
WHO Best Delegate: Ina Nip (Argentina)
DISEC Outstanding Delegate: Finn McCarthy (Ireland)
SOCHUM Best Delegate: Mia Narula (France)
Ramapo’s MUN-ers are now looking forward to their conference next month. The club’s hardworking advisor, Mr. Verdon shares, “Now, our program will participate in AMUN at Bergen Academies this February, where they will find similar success, I’m sure.” Mr. Verdon also tells Rampage that some students will be participating in crisis committees like Norse mythology, organized crime of the 1920s, and the Peloponnesian War. Best of luck to everyone and go get ‘em delegates!
