As the Ramapo Boys Soccer season comes to an end, senior goalkeeper Michael Latronica is definitely a name to be recognized and remembered. This year the team has done exceptionally well, ending their regular season as league champions in the Bergen County Tournament and finalists of States. Michael’s performance throughout the season was no less of an accomplishment. He ended his senior year with 48 saves in 12 games, which is a BIG step up from his junior year, in which he made 13 saves in 5 games (NJ.com).
Michael has not only been a fantastic player on the field but also a great teammate and leader off the field. “It has been a pleasure being Mike’s coach,” says Coach Baumgarten, head coach of the Varsity team. “His leadership went a long way towards the success of the team. [He] is an outstanding player but an even better person.”
Just one of his many recognizable moments on the field was during the county final. With no saves made and one minute left in regular time, Michael made an impressive last-minute save against a strong Garfield striker. His save helped make Jordan Hunt’s goal, scored just four minutes prior, the game-winner and even more importantly Ramapo’s fourth straight title as county champions (NorthJerseySports.com).
Latronica faced immense struggle with his hip injury, which put him out for part of the season. Despite this setback, it has not stopped him from being a highly impactful player. “He showed perseverance and resilience in his return to the field,” Baumgarten explains.
Ramapo Boys Soccer has been a memorable and impactful experience for Michael. Latronica says, “Over the past four years in the boys’ soccer program, I’ve grown not only as a player but also as a person. This program has taught me the importance of leadership, perseverance, and working together as a team; it’s given me memories and friendships I’ll carry with me for a lifetime.”
Michael’s dominance on the field is incomparable. Additionally, as a member of TSF Academy, he travels to play on skilled teams that push him to become an even better player. Whether it be at the club or high school level, it is undeniable Latronica has proven that he is a force to be reckoned with.
Not only is he a great soccer player, but he is also an exemplary student. Taking high level (Honors and AP) classes, he shows versatility both academically and athletically, which will definitely take him far in his collegiate pursuits .
No matter where he attends college, we can guarantee that Michael will excel. His leadership and strength will continue to be an inspiration for his peers. Michael, we cannot wait to see what you accomplish, and we wish you the best of luck!
