Thanksgiving is a time where families get together, make some memories, eat delicious food, and remember the times when the Pilgrims made their long voyage and landed on Plymouth rock. Well now let’s forget all that; let’s talk about Black Friday deals! Black Friday is always on the Friday following Thanksgiving and it is the perfect time to find incredible deals on stores that we all know and love. According to Walden University’s website, in the 1800s many stores sponsored the annual Thanksgiving Day Parade. After the parade would end, all the stores would open and commence the shopping deals.
Everyone loves to get gifts for their loved ones at such a discounted price, but is it really worth the crowded malls, dangerous department stores, and waking up at 3 a.m. to camp outside Garden State Plaza to get into a store first? There are a lot of mixed feelings about Black Friday. A new teacher at Ramapo High School, Dr. Ross, has an opinion about Black Friday and thinks it is unnecessary. She states, “Typically, I think black Friday is more stressful than useful. It makes you feel like you have to shop that day to get the best deals. A lot of the time the deals are kind of overhyped and you’ll be able to get discounts on other days too.” Many people think that Black Friday is “a waste of time” or “a more dangerous way to shop with the heavily crowded stores. The New York Post wrote about Black Friday and the dangers of it in 2020 and stated that “Between 2006 and 2018, according to the Hustle, 44 Black Friday incidents in America left 11 dead and 109 injured — including one man who brought home a shattered hip after being shoved into a shelf of cut-rate presents”. So, although Black Friday might be America’s most valuable shopping day, is it worth the dangers of how dedicated these shoppers are to get their gifts at a discounted price?
While there are all of these dangerous circumstances when it comes to Black Friday, there are some people that enjoy it. Getting holiday gifts for family members is so important to people across the world. But, if you give all the gifts a discount, that just pulls even more people into buying holiday gifts. A current freshman at Ramapo high school, Kelly Clemente, loves to shop, and thinks Black Friday is a great way for families to save on holiday gifts. She comments, “I find it very useful because you don’t spend as much money as you usually do when you go to the mall and I like getting a lot of stuff for a discounted price for the holidays.”
Black Friday has been around for years, and is known all across America. People have mixed feelings about this discount shopping for holidays, but there are always alternatives, like Cyber Monday. Cyber Monday is when you shop online with discounted prices, which is a much safer option. No matter what, we will all have a great time shopping for this year’s upcoming holiday season.
