Ramapo is a highly sports-oriented school, ranking as the top public school for student-athletes in New Jersey (niche.com). The Ramapo Women’s Sports Coalition was founded by alumni Bridget Carr and Madeline Sanz with the intention of creating a safe space for female athletes and bringing recognition to women in sports. Since graduating last year, they have passed the ball to the new co-presidents, McKenna Houston and Kirsten Seyffer, and new co-vice presidents, Lucy Carr and Aubrey Kwon. As Kirsten put it, “This club is more than just being women who play sports – it’s bringing our message to other people and sharing how strong and resilient female athletes have become in spite of the social challenges. We pull ourselves back up, and I love that this club honors that.”
The interest meeting was held on Wednesday, October 2nd, but the club is always open to new members. Typically, meetings are held once a month after school in the 905 Health room, though the specific day of the week is subject to change. The meetings are usually concise, as they are held with the knowledge that members often have other athletic commitments after school, but the goal is to help students and student-athletes have meaningful conversations and boost their confidence. These discussions include topics like current events, nutrition, mental health, and equal pay. Dedicated advisor, Coach Stephen, explains, “This is an empowering club for members as it gives young female athletes the opportunity to relate to the problems even professional or Olympic female athletes face.”
In the future, RWSC is planning on conducting fundraisers, equipment drives, and other community service events. Some ideas include teaming up with other clubs or organizations to spread the support, and working with the younger recreational athletes. “I believe that we can help positively impact the culture and social aspect of female sports,” Kirsten added. “We’re here to support.” By promoting awareness and positivity, the Ramapo Women’s Sports Coalition will lead and inspire female athletes for years to come!
