Most Ramapo students have likely seen or heard Relay for Life being advertised on Schoology or the morning announcements, but what is it exactly? Why are we hosting it? Why should you participate?
Relay for Life began when Dr. Gordon “Gordy” Klatt raised money in May of 1985 by walking and running around a track in Tacoma, Washington, for a full day in order to support the American Cancer Society. He raised $27,000 through contributions to help save lives from cancer while walking and running more than 83.6 kilometers, with the assistance of friends, family, and patients (American Cancer Society).
Today, Relay for Life is a volunteer-run event that celebrates cancer survivors, supports those who have lost loved ones to cancer, and raises funds to promote cancer research and support for patients. Almost 4 million people take part in Relay events in over 5,000 communities today, and it is estimated that the event has raised nearly $5 billion to date (American Cancer Society). Events usually vary, but they typically include a survivor lap around a track to celebrate cancer survivors, then other interactive activities.
The Ramapo-Indian Hills Relay for Life will take place on the Ramapo football field from Friday May 17th to Saturday May 18th. Grace Anderson, the Social media and marketing chair of this event, speaks about organizing Relay: “We are all high school kids working together, and because a lot of individuals are impacted by cancer in different ways, we as a community are able to use those experiences as motivation to fundraise and make a difference in our community. I love working with my friends to create this event and meeting people from Indian Hills. We are all creating these friendships while making a difference in the community and it’s extremely rewarding. Relay for Life is for a good cause and everyone feels good doing it!”
The night involves staying overnight on the Ramapo football field, walking the track, spending time doing fun activities with friends, and enjoying games, food, and music, while also raising money for an amazing cause (rih.org). When asked her favorite thing about Relay, Señora Ciprian, one of the organizers for the event, says “It’s the incredible sense of community and support that fills the air. As a breast cancer survivor, I know firsthand the power of coming together to fight against cancer. At Relay for Life, you’ll be surrounded by friends, classmates, and neighbors who are all united in the same cause. It reminds us that no matter our challenges, we’re never alone. So join us at Relay for Life and be a part of something truly special!”
And for anybody who isn’t able to make it to this year’s Relay, do not fret. It has become a tradition at Ramapo, and according to Señora Ciprian, “it’s not going anywhere. We’re committed to making each year’s event even more memorable and impactful than the last. So mark your calendars and get ready to join us for another unforgettable Relay for Life experience next year, and for many years to come!”
Relay for Life is truly a fantastic event. Consider joining this unique and inspiring experience to be part of a united team that makes a difference!
