
The winter sports season here at Ramapo has officially ended, with thirteen sports having a successful season. Carrying big bags to school, waking up early on Saturdays, practicing late into the night, and spending countless hours preparing are just a few examples of the dedication, hard work, and perseverance that went into the three months of training. The following sports have indeed demonstrated what it means to be a team.
Ramapo has many options for the winter season, including boys and girls basketball, ice hockey, winter track, swimming, wrestling, bowling, competitive dance, and boys and girls fencing.
Starting with basketball, the team achieved an overall record of 19-11, 4-4 in the Big North-National Division, finishing 25th in their statewide ranking, 5th in North Jersey, and, most notably, 3rd in the New Jersey Division Group III (NJ.com). The girls’ basketball team had an impressive season. Their coach, Coach Gordon, states, “Ramapo Girls Basketball had a successful season; we finished 22-6 and won the Big North Freedom Division!” They had a statewide ranking of 25th in New Jersey and had a North Jersey ranking of 6th!

The ice hockey team had a fantastic season, having an overall record of 15-9 and winning the Stars Division. Some notable players include Max Simpson, William Ross, and Niko Smilovic (NJ.com).

The girls’ and boys’ winter track teams finished strong, getting 5th in the nationals for shuttle hurdles and 1st in Bergen County for the 4×400. Some significant players include Ryan Ficarra, who achieved a new school record for the 400m (50.69), and Sandra Vitolo, 2nd in the 55m hurdles (8.25), current Bergen County #1 (northjersey.com).
During the 2024–2025 season, the Ramapo High School wrestling team, under the leadership of Head Coach Bill DiMauro, achieved a commendable overall record of 13–9 and a league record of 3–1 in the Big North – Freedom Division. Senior Joey Fulco delivered an outstanding performance in the Bergen County Tournament by defeating a state finalist to secure a county title. In the NJSIAA Region 1 Tournament, Freshman Connor DePersis competed in the 106-pound weight class. He advanced past the first round with a decision victory but was defeated in the quarterfinals, a huge accomplishment (NJ.com).
The gymnastics team won the Bergen County Championships. They achieved an outstanding overall record of 9–2 and remained undefeated in their league with an 8–0 record. (NJ.com).
The Varsity and Junior Varsity (JV) teams secured first-place finishes in the Jazz category at the Dance Team Union Regional Competition held at Wayne Valley High School (Rampage).
In the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group 3 Tournament, Ramapo defeated Teaneck High School 2–0 and advanced to the quarterfinals (NJ.com).
The boys’ and girls’ fencing teams had a great season. The boys’ fencing team has a record of 10-3. The girls’ fencing team won 5-6 meets. Their coach, Coach Miller, comments: “A phenomenal season, where one freshman, seven sophomores, and one senior came together to earn third place in the District and County, several individual and postseason accolades, and a Top 15 position in the state rankings. I cannot wait to see what the future holds for this young team.”
Natalie Woo, a sophomore and one of the girls’ fencing team captains, said, “The fencing team helps show what it means to be a team. Learning together, going through wins and losses, and supporting each other through it all that’s not just a team but friends.”
This year’s winter sports season at Ramapo showcased exceptional talent, achievements, and an unwavering spirit of teamwork and sportsmanship. Ramapo is proud to say that it was a successful one!
