As it got closer to the time of the Super Bowl, Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles fans clashed; surrounded by people supporting the opposing team, there was no ounce of sportsmanship among them. In being so proud and (possibly overly) competitive, these fights would all end with one group being on top — whoever won the title as the champion of Super Bowl LIX. And let’s just say, it was a major letdown for those supporting the red and gold.
The game ended with an Eagles win of 40-22. It wasn’t even close. Patrick Mahomes, star quarterback for the Chiefs, was sacked (tackled with the ball in hand) six times – the most in his career. Travis Kelce didn’t catch a pass until the third quarter. The Chiefs in the back of their minds aimed to win a 3-peat for the Super Bowl. In 2024, the Eagles were nearly close to winning, but kicker Harrison Butker kicked a field goal to win Kansas City the title in a score of 38-35 (ESPN). Whether it be that the Chiefs were slacking or the Eagles upped their game, there is no denying that their performances are incomparable.
Quarterback Jalen Hurts earned the Super Bowl MVP honors after throwing two touchdowns and running for a score on a tush push. In this game, he threw a total of 221 yards. The team’s defense was unstoppable, and the offense was nothing less. In the first half alone the score was 21-0. A throw by Mahomes was even caught by defensive back Cooper DeJean, who made the score 17-0 after running it 38 yards (ESPN). The Gatorade was thrown over Coach Nick Sirianni nearly three minutes before the game ended.
With the build-up of anticipation since the two teams were announced to compete and the actual game date, people expected a close game, with the odds of either team winning being up to chance. The Chiefs’ underwhelming performance left many to feel that it was simply a waste of time. “The Chiefs looked lost out there,” says senior Matt Szeligowski. It can be argued that even the advertisements, commercials, and halftime show were the only reasons why people continued to watch. However, even that was disappointing for some. “The game was obviously a blowout,” says Mr. Jaeger. “And with the commercials being released before the game, it wasn’t as entertaining as other years. At least Taylor Swift was only shown once.”
As Travis Kelce walks away in his sparkly outfit in shame and the Super Bowl ends, Eagles fans continue celebrating their victory. In the year-long wait, and teams continue competing against each other, let’s hope it will help make up for the disappointing game this year.
