The Ramapo girls varsity volleyball team has wrapped up the season with an outstanding record of 24-5! Led by captains Addison Webb and Sophia Goldstein, the team reached the most single-season wins since 2010 and won the first sectional championship since 2016.
The girls defeated Wayne Valley in the Sectional Finals and defeated Millburn in the Group Three North Finals, making them the league champions for the second year in a row. Coach Van Hook, the varsity coach, is extremely proud of the girls. He comments that although they lost the overall State Final match against Princeton, “it does not take away from the amazing season that we had.”
The game against Wayne Valley began with Sophia Goldstein serving and the team earning 11 consecutive points. They then quickly reached victory, with scores of 25-11 for the first set and 25-17 in the second set (nj.com). Addison Webb shares that this game was extra special for the team, as “the Wayne Valley coach (Danny Sciolaro) is the former Ramapo JV coach and coached most of the girls on our varsity team!”
Sciolaro comments, “I learned a lot from Dave Van Hook at Ramapo, I definitely consider him my mentor. A lot of things I do at practice are things that he does. My takeaway from the season is that coaching these girls is the best gift ever. They’re an incredible group that deserves the world and I’m so happy for them and the season that they had” (nj.com).
As the number one team in the state of New Jersey, the game against Princeton was expected to be the toughest match the girls would play this season. They fought hard, but it ended with Princeton’s victory in two sets of scores 25-8 and 25-11 (nj.com).
Addison Webb reflects, “The team has done really well this year.” Despite the loss against Princeton, she is “so proud of how far our team has come and what we have accomplished. I know that the team will do great things next year as well!”
According to coach Van Hook, the Ramapo team has set records this year, with notable team statistics leaders including the following: sophomore Sara Wingfield with the most kills (247), senior Addison Webb with the most blocks (15), junior Becca Salmins with the most digs (257), junior Ella Petrevski with the most assists (551), and senior Sophia Goldstein with the most aces (35).
“I love coming into practice,” remarks Coach Van Hook. “Not many coaches love it, but I love it. We move forward as a team. These girls are a joy to be around. They work hard, they come with lots of energy, and it’s just really good for them” (nj.com). Overall, Ramapo’s girls varsity volleyball team was extremely successful this season, reaching records they hadn’t reached in years! We are extremely proud of the team, and wish them all the best in the coming years.
