Current senior Charlie Wingfield, tight end and outside linebacker for the Ramapo Raiders, wears his number 11 with pride. He played for Franklin Lakes during his middle school years, and Charlie was determined to continue his efforts at Ramapo, and he is not disappointed. He already has 223 receiving yards this year alone, and 616 total as a varsity player. Coach Guttuso of Ramapo’s Varsity Football team speaks no less of his performance: “Offensively at TE he is a weapon in the passing game and has established himself as a dominant blocker in the run game. Defensively at outside linebacker he is one of our leading tacklers and is constantly making plays.” If the stats don’t speak for themselves, his awarded recognition should. In the past year, he has been awarded First Team All-County and First Team All-League, and aims just as high (if not higher) for this season. In fact, he has recently been nominated for Week 6 North Jersey’s Football Player of the Week, so make sure to vote for Ramapo’s very own nominee!
With a whole family of football players and lovers, Charlie took to the sport hoping to find the love for it on his own, which he certainly did. His family’s support is something he carries with him on a daily basis, as he says himself, “They’ve always been there for me, pushed me to my limits, and have made me the person I am today.”
The person he is today is not just limited to a talented varsity football player; he is a dedicated and productive member of his community. He volunteers with youth football games in the area, and even helps with football-themed birthday parties, aiding the next generation of potential players to find and nurture a love for their sport just as he did. He broadens his interests with other sports such as basketball and baseball, while also setting aside time to spend with family and friends. Wingfield is someone his teammates and community members appreciate both on and off the field, and he greatly values the relationships that football and community service have gifted him these past few years.
With the support of countless people around him, Wingfield can enjoy one of his favorite aspects of football: competing alongside his teammates. Helping one another improve and practice is an essential part of any successful team, which is why Wingfield’s commitment to it is undoubtedly exemplary. That is not to say he has been without his struggles; Wingfield has had moments of self-doubt, dealt with some injuries, and fought to gain a starting position on the field. However, he has not given up and has made a well-rounded and proud name for himself.
When asked if he will continue his career after Ramapo, Charlie Wingfield confidently answered that he will. He has committed to Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and intends to study Exercise Science. Wingfield tells us, “My ultimate goal is to make it to the NFL but if that doesn’t work, I plan on going into the chiropractic business.”
Our Ramapo community wishes him the best of luck in anything and everything he chooses to pursue, and are proud to have him wear our green and white. Go Po!
