Everyone can agree that the MET Gala is the fashion event of the year. It brings excitement to celebrities, fans, and the world of fashion. However, it can also cause some controversy for attendees who show up with bold and unconventional outfits. This year’s theme was “Sleeping Beauty’s: Reawakening Fashion.” However, the official dress code was “Garden of Time”. While celebrities make an effort to dress according to the theme, other celebrities are remembered for arriving in a style all their own. This year was certainly a gala to remember, with gorgeous gowns and other interesting looks, to say the least!
The Met Gala has been a night that celebrates the Museum of Metropolitan Art’s costume institute for years, and only the top celebrities receive an invitation. Anna Wintour, the editor in chief of Vogue magazine, controls the invitations to the Met Gala. The fabulous looks proved that Wintour’s selections are always on point. Sophomore Eva Mellas stated, “The Met Gala is something I look forward to every year as someone who loves fashion. I love seeing all the beautiful gowns and suits, but it really disappoints me when the majority of the guests attending do not stay on theme.”
One of the most popular looks at the Met this year was worn by Zendaya. She displayed three gorgeous dresses that night; the first was a peacock-inspired gown by John Galliano inspired by a 1999 look from Dior. Fans were in awe of the design and her fairy-tale villain-inspired makeup and gown. The second look was a dramatic black gown and an equally striking flowered headpiece. The gown was also designed by Galliano from his Gievenchy era in 1996. Her final look was a sparkling pink and white gown with a deep v-neck line, custom made by Celia Kritharioti. The Met is a night where celebrities go all out, and Zendaya did exactly that with her breathtaking apparel.
Another fan favorite look was South African singer Tyla’s sand sculpture dress. The designer, Bailman, wanted the dress to challenge conventional views of fashion and reference the sands of time, which fit perfectly with the theme. The dress was made from actual sand and micro crystals, and the designer made sure that everything fit Tyla to perfection.
English teacher Ms. Davanzo states, “ I adored the theme of the Met Gala this year! ‘The Garden of Time’ dress code for the Gala really fit my vibe. I loved the mix of the ethereal (Zendaya’s Margiela look, Sydney Sweeney) with the playful (Ayo Edebiri). Given the potential for this theme, I was surprised to see so many celebrities playing it so safe and so boring – too much black and cream for my taste! Cardi B was someone I thought did a LOT for little pay-off.”
While there were many gorgeous looks, one rather odd look was that of Jordan Roth. He was dressed in a custom Valentino head to toe floral gown that also went over his head like a hood. The outfit may have fit the theme theme, but it was certainly in a peculiar way!
The Met is always a fan favorite, and this year did not disappoint. All of the looks can be appreciated for their uniqueness and eclectic attempts to fit the theme!
