From the Brows to the Boy: Selena Gomez and Hailey Bieber Explained

It all started when Selena Gomez posted a TikTok video of her eyebrows. She explained how she wished she was “as pretty as Bella Hadid,” using an audio of the model. However, in a follow up video, she jokes, “Instead, this is me. I laminated my brows too much. My name is Selena Gomez… See, it doesn’t even sound sexy” (Women’s Health). Little did she know that her joke would turn into a feud.
Hailey Bieber and Kylie Jenner took this opportunity to taunt Gomez. It was all done on Jenner’s Instagram page, where she posted a picture saying “this was an accident?????” She went on to post a picture of a FaceTime with Hailey Bieber, where they were only showing their eyebrows. After viewing these stories, it was believed by fans that the pair was making fun of Gomez.
That wasn’t the only thing people noticed; Bieber seemed to be copying Gomez through multiple aspects. One is shown through past interviews, compared in a TikTok: Gomez said she wished people could “know her heart,” and Bieber says the same in a Tonight Show interview. She has also copied numerous outfits Gomez has worn out in public. There’s a cooking show called “Selena + Chef,” and then, 2 years later, comes Bieber with “What’s in my Kitchen?”
Then came the tattoo; social media claimed it disproved the copying controversy. Gomez has a tattoo of the lowercase letter “g” behind her left ear for her baby sister, Grace, made around October of 2015 (Steal Her Style). Bieber has the same tattoo in the same location. She had this created to tribute the daughter of the pastor of Zoe Church, who was diagnosed with a rare and incurable cancer (Sasso). It was made in June of 2015, showing that it was actually Gomez who copied Bieber in this case.
“I think that there is a lot to show that Hailey is a copycat,” says Savannah DeFino, sophomore at Ramapo High School. “She needs to respect what Selena does and go off on her own path, not one that Selena has already created.”
When Justin Bieber and Gomez were a couple around 2010, according to multiple clips, Bieber has been “stalking” the two (The Daily Reaction). She could be seen in the background of clips with the two in front. The crowd watching this drama unfold now notices the possible obsession Bieber had with Gomez.
Justin Bieber has not taken a stance on the matter. According to Entertainment Tonight, he does not want to speak about it publicly, knowing that it will only amplify the situation and bring more attention to it. It’s debatable what Justin Bieber would say: Would he support his wife, or his ex?
“From what I understand, this is a long-standing conflict between the two celebrities. But what I can take away from it is that there are both misunderstandings and mistakes from each of them. Selena Gomez tends to stay away from social media when she feels she is being attacked and I must say, that’s a good lesson to us all. Social media can really misconstrue messages and inflict mental pain on both sides. My advice to the girls (and maybe Ramapo students): just be kind and stay off social media,” says Mrs. Vander Molen, teacher at Ramapo.
This drama seems to have no end, however everyone knows that it will eventually settle. How, we can’t determine. It’s easy to say that it will arise again, the drama between Selena Gomez and Hailey Bieber.
